The Band Toto Asia
Toto expanded its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto saw North America as a growth market for Washlet bidets and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Origins
The early history of Toto that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic expansion. In the first half, Toto produced products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s the company began expanding outwards to profit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other manufacturers' products to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the market share of the company globally.
In the 1990s Toto began to focus on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The most recent toilet features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its difficulties. Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a stronger, more consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
